Welcome to Kindergarten!

Mrs. Olson

Congratulations! Your child is entering his/her first year of formal education. This is an exciting milestone for both you and your child. Our goal is high school graduation and hopefully education beyond.

It's always exciting to see kindergartners grow physically, academically and personally. It is my goal to provide an environment which is nurturing and academically exciting where your child will feel safe and valued.

As parents you are an important part of your child's education and I want to keep you in the loop. Please watch for weekly newsletters from me as well as daily written communication from your child starting in October. Please be sure to check backpacks daily for these notes. It's important to read your child's Home School Connection together with your kindergartner. This is a great conversation starter about your child's day.

The best way to contact me is through e-mail. Please feel free to keep me in the loop regarding your child at home.

Sight Words: Please find this weeks sight words on the back of the paper copy of the newsletter sent home with your child. At this point in the year, I allow students to suggest sight words that they are interested in learning. Please help your child brainstorm words they use often but don’t know how to spell. We’ll select two per day.

Reading: Our end-of-the-year assessments are fast approaching. We’ll be reviewing letter naming, alliteration and rhyme this week as well as re-assessing reading levels.

Writing:
We are in the middle of our How To writings. Students are learning to organize their thoughts before writing; add details and edit their work.

Math: Next week we will continue our review of key topics in preparation for our end of the year assessments.

Science:
Next week we will be studying animals! Our class fish are due to arrive, followed by worms. Ask your kindergartner about them in the next few weeks!

News and Reminders:

May 5 – No School
May 6 – End of the Year Kindergarten Assessments begin May 16 – Field Day
May 27 – No School

Field Trips:
May 21 – MN Zoo
Watch for more information!

There is still time for students to join the 100 Book Club, keep reading at home and turn in your book lists! Last day to turn in book lists is May 10, 2013.

Tuesday begins our end of the year assessments by a district cadre. Please be sure your child is well rested and encourage him/her to eat a good breakfast at home or school.
