When should a child stay home or attend school?

Students and parents are frequently concerned about when students should stay home or attend school. You can expect your child to be ill 5 - 7 days during a school year. Please have a child care plan when your child is ill.

This flyer provides useful information intended to help with this decision, including:

  • If a student has had a fever of 100 degrees or more, the student should stay home for 24 hours AFTER THE TEMPERATURE RETURNS TO NORMAL.
  • If a student has vomited or had diarrhea, the student should stay home for 24 hours after the last episode.

Remember that a child ill with an infectious disease can spread the disease when in contact with other in the family and community. Please contact the Health Office at (612) 668-4007 with any questions about when to keep a child home from school.
