Kindergarten Expectations

Kindergarten students learn:

- to hear the sounds in words
- the alphabet
- the sounds of letters
- commonly used words
- to enjoy books

- communicate through print
- write student's own names using one capital letter per name
- print letters and numbers
- write from left to right, top to bottom on the page
- use temporary spelling by writing the sounds students hear

- order numbers 0-21
- read and write numbers 0-31
- count aloud to 100, backwards from 10
- skip count by 2's, 5's and 10's
- identify one more and one less than a given number
- add and subtract whole numbers
- identify and continue patterns
- identify and sort two and three dimensional shapes
- name coins
- identify positional words (eg. in, on, around)
- understand measurement of time
- compare and sort objects

Social Studies:
- identify and place seven continents
- American and world history introduction
- understand common cultural phrases
- identify American symbols and figures
- in-depth study of at least three historians

Introduction to the following units:
- beginning animals
- trees
- paper
- wood
- fabric
- life science
