MPS Back to School Supply Drive

Help MPS students start the year ready to learn! Whether students are learning in-person or learning at home, all students will need basic school supplies to succeed in school this year.

Curbside drop off events:

Please wear masks and maintain social distance when dropping off supplies.

Dear Lyndale Families,

I am thrilled to serve as the Principal of Lyndale Community School. From what I have heard, Lyndale is a fantastic place to work, with an engaged community and vibrant culture. I believe families are the school’s partners in a child’s education and I look forward to meeting you all soon.

For the past six years I have worked at Seward Montessori. I’ve been the Assistant Principal for the last four years and was previously the Admin TOSA for two years. I started my career with Minneapolis Public Schools as an Instructional Leader. Prior to Minneapolis, I taught 4th and 5th grade for Chicago Public Schools and the Renton School District in Washington State.

As for me personally, I was raised in a suburb of Chicago, and I have lived in Minneapolis for the last eight years. My husband and I live in South Minneapolis and have two young boys and our oldest will start kindergarten this fall.

During this next year I have a lot to learn about the Lyndale community:  staff, students, families, the climate and culture of the school and much more. I plan to learn from all of you, as you are the experts on Lyndale.

I believe the 2020-21 school year will be great, and I will ensure all students feel welcome, safe, and able to engage in meaningful learning.

Please welcome Meghan O'Connor Fisher, new principal at Lyndale Community School! 

Ms. O’Connor was most recently an assistant principal at Seward Montessori. She has more than 14 years of experience in education, including as an elementary school teacher and instructional leader. Ms. O’Connor shows a deep commitment to supporting students in all areas of their education, from academics and arts to behavior and safety.

Get help buying food while schools are closed. Apply for Pandemic-EBT by June 30th.

Lyndale Families,

On May 28, 2020, Minnesota was approved to offer $325 per child to help buy groceries for families whose children were between the ages of 5 and 18 on September 1, 2019, and received free or reduced-price meals during the 2019-20 school year. All students at Lyndale receive free lunch, which means your family should qualify for these funds. Apply by June 30 at www.mn.p-ebt.org.

To access these benefits, please see the instructions that match your specific situation below.

  • If your family was receiving SNAP or MFIP benefits on March 18, 2020:  You are eligible for these benefits, and $325 per child will be added to your EBT card balance. You do not need to apply for these benefits or take any additional action, as this benefit is automatic.
     
  • If your family received free meals during the past school year and does not receive SNAP or MFIP:  You will need to complete an application for benefits at www.mn.p-ebt.org. When you are approved, you will receive your card in the mail, and you can use it to purchase groceries at any EBT-approved grocery stores. You will receive $325 per child, which will be preloaded onto the card. If you do not complete the short application before June 30, you will not receive these benefits. No social security numbers are required. You only need to provide your child’s date of birth and school, and a parent/guardian’s name, date of birth and home address.

These benefits are available even if your child continued to receive meals through your school. By signing up for these benefits, you will not be enrolling in SNAP, MFIP, free or reduced-price meals or any other program.

If your family is struggling to afford healthy food to eat, please contact your local county or tribal human services agency, apply for additional benefits at ApplyMN.dhs.mn.gov, or contact the Minnesota Food HelpLine at 651-486-9860 or 888-711-1151.

Alternatives to on-site food drives and donations

Lyndale Community:

Many community members have reached out with a desire to support MPS students with food and other resources during this difficult time. We are so grateful, but need to be clear that our schools do not have the staff, the capacity, nor the time to safely and adequately manage and re-distribute these resources. Without the ability to efficiently get these in the hands of those who need them, they may go to waste.

Let’s instead redirect these kindnesses in the following ways:

  1. Direct families in need to our emergency meal distribution sites.
  2. Request that they make donations to AchieveMPLS in the name of the school community they wish to support.
  3. Send donors to this list of food shelves in Minneapolis.

We so appreciate people’s caring generosity and realize it feels wrong to refuse. But we can maximize their gifts by redirecting them to resources better equipped to help. To that end, schools should not host food drives or donations on site. Thank you for complying and for all you do to support our students and families.

Additionally, we want to draw your attention to a correction to the materials we shared last night:

Statement On The Murder of George Floyd

The murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis Police Officer has impacted ourselves, our community, our country and beyond.

As we struggle to process yet another killing of a black man at the hands of local law enforcement, we understand that the social, emotional and physical impact of this tragic event has yet to be fully realized.

Retrieval of Student Belongings

Families are being assigned a specific date and time window from June 3-5 to pick up a bag containing student belongings and return library books and band/orchestra instruments to the school. To ensure everyone stays safe during this process, families will drive up to DOOR 5 (Recess Door/Closest to the Playground) by heading Southbound on Pleasant Avenue towards the Parking Lot and stay in their vehicle while staff places their student's bag in their trunk.

All students will receive a free Lyndale School 2019-2020 yearbook in their bag of belongings!

Eagle Families,

As we approach the end of the school year, I want to share with you details on when and how you will be able to retrieve your student's belongings that may have been left behind when school buildings were closed by Governor Walz.

Using safety precautions such as wearing gloves and masks, school staff will gather your student's belongings and place them in a bag(s) which will be labeled with your student's name.

Families are being assigned a specific date and time from June 3 - 5 to pick-up the bag(s) based on your student's last name as indicated in the chart below. Families can come at any point within that time span indicated in the chart [see above chart].

Families with more than one child at our school will get all their children's belongings on the same date, even if their last names are different. The pick-up date will be based on the child whose last name is closest to the start of the alphabet, for example, if your children's names were Jane Doe and Frank Smith, you would pick up both their belongings on Jane's date/time: June 3 between 9:30 and 11:30 am.

To ensure everyone stays safe during this process, families will need to stay in their vehicle and staff will place bags in the trunk--please make sure you have room in your trunk. Under no circumstance will families or students be allowed in the building. Families should drive up to DOOR 5 (Recess Door/Closest to the Playground) by heading Southbound on Pleasant Avenue towards the Parking Lot. Please be aware that other families will be picking up belongings at the same time and you should expect some wait time as vehicles move through the line during this process.

When staff approach your vehicle, please roll down your window a small amount to give them your student's name and open your trunk or back door (for vans) from your vehicle. Staff will stay a safe distance in respect of social distancing.

Finally, this is an opportunity for you to return any library books and/or musical instruments checked out by your student(s). It is very important that we get these back prior to the end of the school year.

All musical instruments should be returned to Lyndale as many will need routine maintenance and cleaning. Mr. Hadley will communicate to parents options for any 4th graders wishing to continue practice on their instrument over the break.

If you are unable to come to the school to get your student's belongings for any reason, please let us know by calling 612-668-4000 or emailing to john.alverson@mpls.k12.mn.us so we can work with you to get any items you may need or to let us know you'd like us to hold them at the school until we return to in-school learning. Please include the following information when you contact us:

  • Your student's first and last name
  • Your current home address
  • The best phone number to reach you
