Letter from Principal, Nov. 16, 2020

Dear Lyndale Families,

I hope everyone had a nice weekend and is adjusting to the cold weather. It looks like winter is officially here. Mr. Mohamed’s last day with us is on Tuesday, November 25th. We want to thank Mr. Mohamed for 25 years of service to the Lyndale community! Lastly, there is a lot of important information in this letter, so please read it all the way through.

Material Pickup:  All Grades EXCEPT 4th: Friday, November 20th 12-4pm RESCHEDULED to Monday, November 30, 12-4pm

Due to the rise in COVID cases, we are asking families to stay in their vehicle and staff will place bags in the trunk. Families should drive up to DOOR 5 (Recess Door/Closest to the Playground) by heading Southbound on Pleasant Avenue towards the Parking Lot. Please be aware that other families will be picking up belongings at the same time and you should expect some wait time as vehicles move through the line during this process. When staff approach your vehicle, please roll down your window a small amount to give them your student’s name and open your trunk or back door (for vans) from your vehicle.

If you walk to the school to pick up materials, please use the main entrance door on 34th street. This will ensure cars and pedestrians are not near each other.

American Indian Awareness and Family Involvement Week:  Throughout the week of November 16-20, Minneapolis Public Schools’ Indian Education Department has planned various learning opportunities and experiences to be a part of in honor of American Indian Awareness and Family Involvement Week. In addition to daily topics, every day has multiple events throughout the day (click on the links within the flyers for more information). Outside of next week's celebrations, explore many of our local community resources (see resource list) that honor and celebrate American Indian culture.

Site Council Meeting:  Join us for our monthly Site Council meeting this Wednesday at 6pm. We will have updates and review our School Improvement Plan goals.

We will meet using Google Meet. Please check your school messenger email for the Principal letter to Families to find information on how to join the meeting. Call the school at 612-668-4000 with any questions.

Teacher Planning Days November 23rd & 24th:  Minneapolis Public Schools is providing teachers with two planning days to plan instruction to meet the needs of our students through Distance Learning. On these days, students will have asynchronous learning activities on Seesaw and Google classroom. There will not be any live lessons.

Spirit Days:  Lyndale students will have an opportunity to celebrate school spirit this week. On Thursday, students are encouraged to wear their pajamas, and on Friday, students are encouraged to wear clothes inside out or backwards.

School Placement Letters:  All MPS students will receive letters in the coming week(s) with their assigned school for the 2021-22 due to the new boundaries from the CDD. If you have any questions about this letter, please contact me.

School Bell Times:  Lyndale will have a new start time of 8:25am and 2:55 dismissal starting fall of 2021. At their November 10 meeting, the MPS Board of Education voted to approve the proposed bell time schedule beginning school year 2021-22. The Board of Education is confident the approved schedule can meet the goals of:

  • Increasing participation in after-school programming particularly for those schools with a higher concentration of families receiving educational benefits as this has been shown to have a direct correlation to student achievement and sense of belonging.
  • Reducing transportation costs so that savings can be reinvested into the classroom.
  • Improving on-time arrivals at schools.

Please complete the Application for Educational Benefits TODAY! We need every Lyndale family to complete this form. We still have 182 students who need to complete the form. The information collected on these forms impacts our school budget, so we ask for every family to complete it. Staff will continue to make phone calls home as a reminder. If you are certain your family does not apply for benefits, you can “decline benefits” without providing any income information. Here is a link to complete the form: https://nutritionservices.mpls.k12.mn.us/application We also have paper copies of the forms here at school in English, Spanish, and Somali.
