Dear Lyndale Families,
As 2020 comes to an end, I cannot help but reflect on what a year this has been. Our students have been home since March 10th, over nine months ago. In this time we have gone from what we call survival teaching in the spring to full Distance Learning this fall. Our students are learning to read, solve mathematical equations, research a project and even how to dance all through a computer and at a distance from their teachers. All of us are more technology literate than we were before March 10th, and I am hoping these skills continue whenever we do return to in person schooling. Like everyone else, I would love to see Covid-19 come to an end, and I am optimistic that 2021 will be a better year for all of us.
Winter Break: There will be no school December 21st- January 1st. School resumes on January 4, 2021.
Material Pickup: Thursday, December 17th from 12-4pm.
All Grades except 5th grade: Materials picked up will be for after winter break. Similar to the last material pickup, we are asking families to stay in their vehicle and staff will place bags in the trunk. Families should drive up to DOOR 5 (Recess Door/Closest to the Playground) by heading Southbound on Pleasant Avenue towards the Parking Lot. Please be aware that other families will be picking up belongings at the same time and you should expect some wait time as vehicles move through the line during this process. When staff approach your vehicle, please roll down your window a small amount to give them your student’s name and open your trunk or back door (for vans) from your vehicle. If you walk to the school to pick up materials, please use the main entrance door on 34th street. This will ensure cars and pedestrians are not near each other.
Flexible Learning Day Updates: Last Friday we started our first flexible Friday. For some classes, schedules may have changed a bit and for others not too much. If you have any questions about Flexible Fridays please email your child’s teacher or me. Our specialist teachers will continue to keep their same schedule, but will rotate through classes that will be asynchronous to ensure they receive their planning time. The specialists teachers will communicate this to the classroom teachers and the students beforehand.
School Request open till February 7th: Each family should have received communication about your child’s school assignment for next year. Due to the District Comprehensive Design, the boundaries for Lyndale have changed. This means some students will stay at Lyndale based on their home address, and some students may be assigned to Barton, Burroughs, Bancroft, or another Minneapolis school. If Lyndale is not your assigned school next year, you may choose to open enroll your child. Open enrollment is based on the space in the building, and not all families who open enroll will get in. In addition, you will not be provided transportation. To open enroll, you will need to complete the school request process on this link. We want each and every Lyndale student to stay at our school next year, but we understand this may not work for every family. If you really want your child to attend Lyndale next year and can provide transportation, I recommend putting Lyndale as your first choice and then their assigned school or a magnet school as your second, being aware that you may not get your first choice.
Mark your calendars! All MPS free meal box pick-up sites will be open December 21-22 and December 29-30 during winter break, with regular hours.
