Letter from Principal, Jan. 11

Dear Lyndale Families,

The first week of 2021 has shaken us in lots of ways. The events that took place at our nation’s capital last Tuesday were disturbing, unsettling, and have left many of us with anxiety over the safety of our country. I emailed the staff on Wednesday morning reminding them to first take care of themselves, and second to listen to the questions students may bring. I do hope for better days in 2021 for our country.

Return to In Person Learning: On Friday, you should have received two messages from the district regarding the plan for students to return in person. Per the Governor’s executive order, parents can choose to keep their students in Distance Learning and the district will provide instruction. The district is asking that all families register their child by January 22nd. If you do not register your child, the default goes to students returning in person. Here is the link to register and find many questions to frequently asked questions. We won’t know until after January 22nd if your child will have their same teacher or a different teacher depending on staffing. Our goal is to keep students with their teacher, but some staff may not be able to return in person at this time and some families may choose to keep their children in distance learning while the teacher returns in person. I hope to have more concrete information by the end of January.

As parents, I know you have lots of questions about returning in person. I want to ensure you that the Lyndale staff will do everything possible to make our building safe. I am offering a question and answer meeting for families on Wednesday, January 13th from 5:30-6:30pm. Translators will be available.

Please check your school messenger email for the Principal letter to Families to find a link to join the meeting. Call the school at 612-668-4000 with any questions.

  • Tasha Owens, our health office assistant, will be here during student hours. Michaela Gallagher, our school nurse, will still split her time between Lyndale and Emerson
  • Building is prepared with signage for number of students in the bathroom, visual spacers on the floor to keep distance, and hands free hand sanitizer stations on walls
  • Teachers will arrange rooms to give students at least 3 feet of distance
  • Students will have recess and PE. Masks need to be worn
  • We will have one way walk areas, specific up and down stairwells, and divide up entry and exit doors to reduce the amount of people in one space at any time.

  • All meals will continue to be free to all students. Meals will be prepackaged
  • Students will eat breakfast in the classrooms
  • Students will eat lunch in the lunchroom, maintaining 6 feet of distance. Students may take their masks off to eat

Open House Events: Most Minneapolis Public Schools are hosting virtual open house events this month. To see a list of the dates and times, click here. We have held three open house events so far and they have all been fantastic. It has been recommended that most schools list the Zoom or Google Meet link on their website about fifteen minutes before their event. You can also email the principal or assistant principal directly for the link.

Barton Open House Events: Incoming families will receive an email with the direct links.

School Request open till February 7th: Each family should have received communication about your child’s school assignment for next year. Due to the Comprehensive District Design, the boundaries for Lyndale have changed. This means some students will stay at Lyndale based on their home address, and some students may be assigned to Barton, Burroughs, Bancroft, or another Minneapolis school. If Lyndale is not your assigned school next year, you may choose to open enroll your child. Open enrollment is based on the space in the building, and not all families who open enroll will get in. In addition, you will not be provided transportation. To open enroll, you will need to complete the school request process on this link. We want each and every Lyndale student to stay at our school next year, but we understand this may not work for every family. If you really want your child to attend Lyndale next year and can provide transportation, I recommend putting Lyndale as your first choice and then their assigned school or a magnet school as your second, being aware that you may not get your first choice.
