Voice is the audible sound resulting from the vibration of the vocal cords. A voice disorder exists when the voice is significantly different from the voices of others of similar age, gender and cultural group. A disorder of the voice would call attention to itself and interfere with effective communication. When a voice sounds abnormal, this may indicate a problem that is in need of medical attention. A voice disorder may be characterized by problems in the areas of:

- voice quality: harsh, breathy, hoarse, unusual nasal resonance

- voice intensity: too loud or too soft

- voice pitch: too high or too low

- other: monotone voice (unable to vary the pitch or loudness), chronically losing one's voice...
