Welcome to 3rd Grade with Mr. Pete
My name is Pete Mattsson and I teach 3rd grade at Lyndale Community School. To work in education and a school is a privilege and honor that I do not take lightly. As a lifelong learner and parent, I can begin to appreciate how important it is to cultivate an environment of learning and respect in the classroom that welcomes anyone and everyone who steps through our doors.
From 2002-2006 I studied Psychology and Communication Studies at the University of Minnesota and earned my Bachelor of Arts degree. After that I experienced living and working in the Mountains of Colorado for a winter but was drawn back to the charm and beauty of Minnesota. From 2007 until 2014 I worked in the Edina Community Education program as a middle school leader. Since 2008 I have worked in the Minneapolis Public School District in varying positions (AVID tutor, Special Education Assistant, Autism Teacher). From 2013-2016, I attended Hamline University and received my Minnesota K-6 Elementary teaching license. I studied Montessori training at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in from 2017-2018. I have come to realize that I love school and truly am a lifelong learner.
From March of 2008 until January 2016 I was blessed to be a part of the Lyndale community, working as a Special Education Assistant in the City Wide Autism program. In this position I had the opportunity to witness many amazing teachers which ultimately inspired me to obtain my teaching license.
From 2017-2019 I was a Montessori classroom teacher (1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade) at Seward Montessori school in Minneapolis. The mantra for our class was "Calm and kind, grows your mind." I am excited to adopt this mantra in my classroom and am very confident and excited about creating a joyous, welcoming, and rigorous learning community.
My wife Laura and I were blessed with our first child in June of 2015. We are a family that loves animals. We have 1 pet cat named Gizmo (8 years-old) and 1 pet dog named Topaz (5 years-old) and often watch pets for friends and family when they travel. As a family we love playing at parks, riding bikes, going on walks, visiting with friends and family, going to Twins baseball games, swimming, and pretty much anything outside. I enjoy running and biking when free time presents itself, but it is the most fun sharing my interests and hobbies with my daughter as she continues to grow. As luck would have it, my daughter will also be joining the Lyndale family as an incoming High-5 student! Family is the backbone of my joy and motivation and cannot wait to meet and excel with so many new students and families!
Calm and kind, grows your mind
